Snowflake Hat and Scarf FREE Pattern and Tutorial

Let it Snow!

I'm a contestant on American Crafter and
I'm so thrilled to have made it to round 2!
When I read the theme of Round 2 was 'Let it Snow'...
My first thought was SNOWFLAKES!!
It's cold here in Wyoming so I decided to make another hat and scarf for my little one with SNOWFLAKES!

I still consider myself a beginner crocheter and as I busy momma I must have a fast and simple pattern.

I made this hat and scarf in 2 hours.......If you can double crochet...you can make this hat and scarf....if you can't...then find a hook and some yarn and watch some of the FREE learning video's on YouTube......Thats how I learned:-)

What I used
White and Silver Grey
Caron's Simply Soft is another great option for a more delicate look for newborns:)
Hat
I recently learned how to start each hat with a Magic Circle...this allows you to make your starting hole as tight as possible....you can learn this too.....HERE
This pattern is for sizes:
Newborn: 16 inch & Toddler: 18 inch
I used a size F hook.

Round 1 Make a Magic Circle or Ch 3 12 dc in 3rd chain from hook. Join with slip stitch in top of first dc [12 dc]
Round 2 Ch 2, 2 dc in each dc around. Join with slip stitch in top of first dc. [24 dc]
Round 3 Ch 2, *dc in next st, 2 dc in next st. Repeat from * around. Join with slip stitch in top of first dc. [36 dc]
Round 4 Ch 2, *dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st. Repeat from * around. Join with slip stitch in top of first dc. [48 dc]
For 16 inch hat, skip to Round 7.
Round 5 Ch 2, *dc in 7 dc, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join with slip stitch in top of first dc. [54 dc]
Round 6 Ch 2, dc in each dc around. Join with slip stitch in top of first dc [54 dc]
Round 7-12 Ch 2, dc in each dc around. Join with slip stitch in top of first dc.
Round 13 you can do a sc in each stitch around
OR
You can use a front/back dc post stitch
for a nice ribbed finished look and fitted feel.
Trust me the front/back post is easier than it sounds.
With a front or back post stitch, instead of inserting your hook through the top of the dc to pull up a loop, you insert it around the post of the stitch, either in front or back of the work. I watched to few YouTube
video's to get a better understanding
Round 13 Ch 3, dc around the front side of a post then dc around the back side of a post all the way around. Fasten off

Snowflake
You can find every kind of snowflake pattern HERE

I used the Charlie Brown Snowflake pattern from Crochet Me

Ch 4 loosely, sl st in 1st ch to join
Round 1 Ch 1, work 6 sc in ch 4 loop, sl st to 1st sc.
Round 2 Ch 7, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, ch 2, sc in next sc, *ch 5, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, ch 2, sc in next sc* around, join with a sl st to 2nd ch of ch 7.
Round 3 Ch 6, slip stitch in 2nd and 3rd chain from hook, ch 4, slip st in slip st made just before you chained 4, ch 3, sl st in 2nd and 3rd ch from hook, then slip st in 2 ch of beginning.
Next ch 6, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, ch 3, then dc in next sc.
Next *ch 5, slip stitch in 2nd and 3rd ch from hook, ch 4, slip st in slip st made just before you chained 4, ch 3, sl st in 2nd and 3rd ch from hook and in remaining 2 chs of the ch 5, sl st in dc last made.
Next ch 6, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, ch 3, dc in next sc, repeat from * around, ending with a sl st to 2nd ch of starting ch 6 intstead of dc.
Fasten off and leave about a 2-3 ft tail for attaching to hat/scarf and use a yarn needle to attach to hat and scarf

Sounds a little confusing....but trust me once you make your 1st one..it makes more sense with the 2nd...plus how can you mess up a snowflake??? No two are the same!!

If I had a girl I would add some white glitter to the snowflakes!!!

Scarf
Chain as long as you like your scarf.

Row 1 ch 150
Row 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across
Row 3 ch 3, turn, front/back post dc across
Row 4 ch 3, turn, dc across
Row 5 ch 3, turn, front/back post dc across
Continue until you get the width you like.

  11. Beautiful!!! I'm not a crocheter yet. I'm still trying to master knitting. I only started that in October. Once I stabilize this obsession, I think I'll move on to crocheting. The hat and scarf are so pretty!

  12. Absolutely adorable. However, Let it snow is not a term to be thrown around lightly. We have 24 inches and counting. That is a bad 4 letter word! HA!

  22. What a pretty pattern. We don't live where it is cold enough to warrant a scarf and hat, but I could make them as gifts for family up north.
