How to make a GiANT Pencil

Did you see my Guest Post over on
CRAFT GOSSIP?017
I shared how to make a GIANT pencil!
In case you missed it, I would like to share with you how to make this
Pottery Barn inspired pencil!

Isn't my version just as Fabulous??!?!?
I have been working on designing my son's room, re-purposing furniture, updating trim, painting and making decor.
I can't wait to share the BIG reveal when it's all finished!
Now let's make a pencil!! I made the pencil for under $15!
Here’s what you will need:
011
1. A Pointed Fence Post
I purchased a 4inch round x 6 1/2 ft post at farm store for $6.99
Pointed fence posts can be found at many home improvement stores
from $5 to $10 in all sizes untreated or treated.

2. A Stove Pipe
I purchased an adjustable black stove pipe at Mernard’s for $4.77
{in the cooling and heating section}
There are many options,
you could even use dry vent for this part of the pencil.

3. Paint
A primer {optional}, interior latex and some craft paint.

First I primed the post.....
I think this step is optional but because this is a treated post
I wanted to ‘seal’ it.
I did not do any sanding.
I liked the rustic and rough look of the post.

Then I used craft paint for the point, tip and eraser.
A mixture of pink and brown craft paint for the eraser,
tan for point, and black for the tip.
For the body of the pencil I used some leftover yellow house paint.

I really liked the look of this stove pipe with the crinkle
at the top and bottom.
Its very easy to bend. I just wrapped and secured with screws.

See how simple?? The PERFECT Pencil!

I painted this right at my kitchen table and it took about an hour:-)

It looks perfect standing in a corner.....BUT since
I think my 2yr old will try to crawl it, I decided it needed to be hung.

I used two 1/4" x 6" lag screws to support the post.
I pre-drilled 2 holes in the post 16 inches apart
{because most studs are 16inches apart}
and screwed
them into the studs for support. pencil7
I thought it needed a little something more...
so I used my Silhouette and cut 'PENCIL No. 2' in black vinyl
I also think a child's name or a Teacher's name
would be PERFECT too:-)

And there you have it......
simple and inexpensive home décor
with a BIG impact!
Thank you so much for stopping by!
