Updating Kitchen Cabinets with Crown Molding

024
I am in the process of re designing our kitchen.
The ceiling, lighting, floor, counters, sink, walls and cabinets are
ALL getting a facelift!
We added crown molding to ALL the cabinets for under $25!
YES you read that right $25!
Check out the BEFORE:
BEfore
See the tiny trim on the top cabinets….
we removed them and added it to the bottom of the cabinets.
066
We pulled out the old nails and made a few cut adjustments on some of the pieces and nailed them to the lower part of cabinet.
For the upper crown molding we purchased
2011-12-12_20-03-04_282
Three 8ft 3/4" x 4 1/2” primed MDF for $7.99 each at Menard’s
That’s less then $1 a foot!
If you don’t have a Menard’s, we also found some
at Home Depot for $1.69 a foot
which still puts this project under $50!
121
Checking the cuts….
My hubby has some mad cutting skills!
He used a compound miter saw to make 45 degree angle cuts.
This project would have cost A LOT more had I done it…
I’m just not there yet with my cutting skills!
010
We used a nail gun and nailed all the crown molding to the cabinets.
A few nails didn’t sink in all the way.
IF that happens you will need to use a nail set and hammer
the nail in further.
012
The next step is to fill all the nail holes with wood filler.
I used Minwax’s stainable Wood Filler.
016
I simply used my finger to fill in all the holes.
Wait for it to dry, sand smooth and you are ready to
paint/stain your crown molding.
132
One section done!!
129
and second section done!
This was a day project....
What a difference crown molding makes!

A little sneak peek at the color I used…

my painting and distressing techniques…so stay tunedSmile

Amazing!!! I'm so jealous. I can't do crown moulding to save my life. Can't figure out the angle cuts. Yours looks so incredible, and that paint color is fantastic. Can't wait to see more!!! Oh...and brilliant idea of putting the old smaller moulding at the bottom. I've contemplated doing something like that on mine, because I can't stand that I can see just a sliver of the under cabinet lighting on some of the cabinets. Adding moulding would solve the problem! I just might do it now.

Your cabinets look great. The crown molding really adds a lot to them. What I'd like to know is how you added the paneling to the side without a raw edge showing on the front. Well done!
