How to Crochet Sesame Street Hats

Newborn-Adult Sesame Street Hats!

I have a pattern to share! I am going to attempt to share with you  how to make these OH! So CUTE! Sesame Street Hats.

I had a brain storm one day watching my son play with his favorite Elmo doll. As a beginner crocheter...I was sooo pleased with the outcome of the first ELMO hat, that I moved on to other characters.

I know these hats 'look' hard but trust me YOU can make these. The internet is full of FREE patterns and video's to help a beginner along. I found YouTube to be the best place to search for answers to all my questions.

In this tutorial I'm gonna share with you the patterns I found and TRY to explain how to do the other stuff I kinda just made up:0

You might have a better way but this is how and what I used to make these.

I used Sugar'n Cream 100% cotton yarn. But I'm sure ANY yarn would work..so use your favorite:-)


You'll need 1 skein of each color and a H/8-5.00mm hook. 

This pattern is for an average baby's head 6-12 months.
If you need a smaller or larger size, make the necessary adjustments. 
In round 1 of the hat pattern I just changed the number of DC's for a smaller or bigger hat.
Then just adjusted the # of rounds for the right length. (For a newborn I used 12 rounds)

These measurements fit most:
Newborn (5DC)
Head Circumference 13" - 14 "
Hat height = 5.5 to 6"
Baby - 3 to 6 months (6DC)
Head Circumference: 14" - 17 "
Hat height= 6.5 - 7"
Baby - 6 to 12 months (7DC) 
Head Circumference: 16" - 19 "
Hat height = 7.5"
Toddler -12 months - 3 years (8DC)
Head Circumference: 18" to 20 "
Hat height = 8"
Child - 3 - 10 years (9DC)
Head Circumference: 19" - 20 1/2"
Hat height =8.5"
Teens (10DC)
Head Circumference: 20 1/2" - 22"
Hat height 9-10"
Adult Woman (11DC)
Head Circumference: 21.5" - 22.5"
Hat height 9-10"
Adult Man (12DC)
Head Circumference: 23" - 24"
Hat height 9-10"

Cookie Monster

Use the color yarn of your favorite character:
1. Cookie Monster~Hot Blue or Light Blue, White, Black, Warm Brown & Tan
2. Elmo~Red, Orange, White & Black
3. Grover~Bright Navy, Pink, Red, White & Black
4. Oscar~Sage Green, Warm Brown, White & Black
5. Big Bird~ Yellow, Dark Yellow, Pink, Lt Blue, White & Black

For the Hats:
 CH 3, join with a sl st to first CH to form a ring
Round 1: CH 3 (counts as first DC), 7 DC in ring, Join with sl st to top of begining DC (8DC)
Round 2: CH 3, DC in same st, 2 DC in every st around. Join (16DC)
Round 3: CH 3,  2DC in next st , *DC in next st, 2 DC in next st * Repeat * to * around. Join (24DC)
Round 4: CH 3, DC in in next st, 2 DC in next st *DC in next 2 st, 2 DC in next st* Repeat * to * around. (32DC)
Round 5: CH 3, DC in next 2 st, 2 DC in next st *DC in next 3 st, 2 DC in next st* Repeat * to * around. (40DC)
Round 6: CH 3, DC in next 3 st, 2 DC in next st *DC in next 4 st, 2 DC in next st* Repeat * to * around. Join (48 DC)
Round 7-14: DC in each DC
Round 15: 1 SC in each DC around

So to sum it up and make it sound a little easier it's just
1. CH 3, join
2. CH 3, 7 DC or make adjustment
3. 2 DC in each around
4. 1 DC & 2 DC around
5. 2 DC & 2 DC
6. 3 DC & 2 DC
7. 4 DC & 2 DC
8. 1 DC around til you get it long enough
9. Finish off with a SC around...
Easy right?

For the eyes:

There are lots of videos on YouTube that show how to make a round ball....it helped me to understand the directions a little better...
You will want to start with White for all eyes except Big Bird...who has Pink eyelids so the first 4 rows are pink then a row of Blue and finishing with White.
CH 2

Round 1: 3 SC in 2nd CH from hk. DO NOT JOIN. Work in one continual round.
Round 2: 2 SC in ea SC around. (6 SC)
 Place contrasting marker at beginning to mark first stitch.
Round 3: 2 SC in ea SC around. (12 SC)
Round 4-6: SC in eac SC around. (12 SC)
Round 7: SC DEC over two SC, 6 times. (6 SC DEC)

Stuff head with polyester fiber fill or stuffing for shape

Round 8: Join Black and continue to DEC around until closed, tied off.

For the Nose:
Elmo:  Same pattern as the eye but with the orange color.

Grover: Same pattern as the eye but increase Rounds in center to 10 instead of 6 and use pink.

Big Bird: Start pattern like eye but at Round 4:  2 SC in ea SC around until (24SC). Then Round 5-10: SC in each SC around. DO NOT stuff...I used a slightly darker yellow for contrast.

For Mouths:
Elmo: Different pictures of Elmo have different mouths. I used the one that my son's doll had. I just tied Black on one end bought the yarn straight out to the center, SC 6 in a circle and bought the yarn straight out the other side and tied off.

Grover: Use Red, CH 20, turn and SC in each CH across, tied off.

Oscar: Use Black CH 20.

Cookie Monster: Use Black, CH 20, turn skip first CH, SC across, DEC at end..Repeat 6 times. For Cookie: Use Tan, CH 2, Then first 3 Rounds of eye pattern. Tie knots using Warm Brown for chips.

Extras:
Oscar: Eyebrows use Warm Brown. CH 30. Turn CH 4 and SC in each CH across.

Big Bird: For 'feathers' use darker yellow. CH 10. Turn CH 6, SC in CH, CH 5, SC in CH  all the way across.

Assembly:
Lay out items for placement. Pin in place and use a yarn needle  and coordinating yarn to whip stitch everything in place.

Placement of the different eyes and mouth really MAKE the character. Cookie Monsters eyes are 'Wacky' , Oscar is a tad bit crossed eyed, Grover's eyes are pinched and more wide set with his mouth right under is nose. (See photos above)

Just a side note: I make these hats to donate to my area hospital's pediatric and ER wards. I believe these hats would bring comfort to a sick and scared child. I am in the process of recruiting some of the elderly ladies at a local center to help with making hats to donate. Maybe together we will be able to send hats State wide! I am selling a few of these, just to cover material costs for donating. I hope you too will make some to donate :-)
