So I'm jumping on the Sunburst Mirror Bandwagon......
I'll be honest the Sunburst Mirror is not really my thing....but I really wanted to MAKE one.....and well I must say I do LOVE the results!
Here's what I used:
- 1 bundle of cedar shims from Home Depot $4
- 1 Thrift store mirror for $3
- Steel wool
- White vinegar
- Hot glue
- Antique stars from the craft store $4
I am AMAZED that steel wood soaked in vinegar gives a beautiful barn wood result!
I loved this mirror!
And when I seen it...I knew it would be PERFECT for my sunburst!
It already had a hole for attaching to the wall and a lip to hotglue the shims.
I wanted a barn wood look so I googled and stumbled onto a lumber forum with lots of advice on how to get the aged wood look.
I went with what I had around the house....
Vinegar and Steel Wool
Soak the steel wool in vinegar overnight.
First I laid everything out to get the right look....
I went with fast and easy.
Simply laid them end to end on the lip of the mirror and then placed a second row in between the shims of the first layer.
The span measures 40 inches across.....so if you want a smaller span you could cut them in half or if you want a FULLER sunburst you could do more layers.....

For a barn wood look simply rub your vinegar soaked steel wool over the cedar shims.
Let it dry for about an hour.
And this is the result when it's all dry!
Make sure you have your stained shims facing out:-)
Then I hot glued my first row of shims on the lip of the mirror's backside. Then the second row on the back of the first.
I carefully turned it over and rubbed the steel wool in any spots I might have missed...
For an added rustic look...I hot glued a few of these stars.
gotta love a fast and easy home decor project for around $10!!
