How to Make a Giant Photo Booth Style Picture

photo 5(3)
I LOVE photo booth pictures!
This GIANT one adds a modern touch to our living room.
I saw this photo over on Pinterest and knew I could make it using the same technique I did with my Giant Canvas.

{Sorry I don’t have a direct link…all the links on Pinterest lead to spam….
but this is a photo from the movie “The Joneses”}
First I took some cute snapshots of my boy, picked my 4 favorite and added a black border. I tried to crop each one to the same size.
I made sure all my photos were in landscaping so they would be 24x18.
I went online to Staples, uploaded my photos and ordered  the 18x24 engineering print for $1.97 each!
photo 2(9)
I used some leftover insulation foam board and spray adhesive.
You could also use poster board, wood or cardboard.
I did find that with this foam board it does expand and contract in extreme cold or heat.
The shop I was working in was very cool and when I took it outside in the heat to spray, my prints got all warped! It did slightly fix itself when it cools off again so don't panic if you see that happen or make sure you are working in one temperature to prevent that from happening if you use insulation board.
photo 3(11)
I laid out my prints to figure out placement.
I liked it best without trimming the white part of the print.
photo 1(9)
I sprayed one area at a time with spray adhesive. I  started with my print rolled and pressed edge of print to edge of board then roll out and smooth with a credit card.
photo 2(8)
Continue to smooth out any bubbles with the credit card and
prepare to trim the board by laying it out on a flat surface.
photo 3(10)
Use a fresh sharp utility knife and make sure
it’s as long as the board is thick.
photo 4(9)
Then use a straight edge to make a nice clean cut
photo 2(7)
Then I used a sanding block to smooth the edges.
photo 3(9)
Brush off any sanding dust.
photo 4(8)
This step you can skip if you are a pro at editing photos.
I didn’t get my photos cropped to the same size so I needed to fix my margins and make my border wider.
I used a straight edge and a sharpie
photo 5(6)
and filled in with a black marker.
photo 4(7)
Perfect!
photo 3(7)
Next, paint the edges of the board.
photo 2(5)
This picture is 6ft tall.
If I didn’t rotate my photos to landscape, my prints
would have been 8ft tall.
photo 5(4)
Next I sealed my prints with some Mod Podge clear acrylic sealer.
{this is where I noticed the warping in the heat}
photo 1(5)
Oh isn’t it just lovely?!?!photo 2(4)
This project was $8 and took about an hour!

Thank you so much for stopping by!!

It says on the pin that you can upload your photo on staples.com. How do you do that?

So i went to staples with what i thought was a higher quality digital image and it came out really dark. Did you take your photos in bright light? Also i put the photo to b&w before i took it in, should i leave it in color?

I tried printing this at Office Max... and they said No to an engineering print:( Seems a lot of people have been asking to do this, and they caught on... and now charge $5.99 a square foot to print ... I said No Thanks... Too Bad, it was a cute idea...

Unknown said...

I tried to do this on staples.com and they called me and said the prints would come out to dark. He also asked did you get this idea from pintrest...busted. Is there another way I could do this project?

Great Idea, but Staples will no longer do a photo in this engineered type print. So I had them price out from my thumb drive. You can get an 8 1/2 by 11 color copy for 49 cents. When she priced out 12 by 12 for me (to get the square) , it jumped to 12.00. Same price for the color or black and white if you want them square. I still like the idea, and while it does cost more for the prints, I think that it is still a good price. Thanks.
