Homemade Baby Wipes

Hello All

I wanted to tell you how to make homemade baby wipes. A friend of mine gave this to me as a baby gift. What a wonderful baby gift to give. (Thanks Tricia) At first I was a little unsure if I would like them. So I bought regular wipes and my husband and I used both for a few days until we decided that the homemade wipes were so much better.

I have a little butterball baby and it made it so much easier for getting into his little fat rolls when cleaning him because they are a little thinner than regular wipes.

You will need a tub for the wipes, baby oil, baby soap, and paper towels.

I like to use Bounty because they are more durable. I bought a box at Sam's club for around $13 when my son was 2 weeks old and he's now 5 months old and I still haven't used them all up yet. My girlfriend in her gift of showing me how to do this also gave me the baby oil, tub, and baby soap. But you could get all that for less than $10. I don't think I will ever had to buy more before he is potty trained.

Take the roll of paper towels and cut it in half. I used a big kitchen knife. But you can use what works for you. DON'T use one with a serrated edge or else you will have shredded paper towels.

Next I put about an inch of water in the tub. You might find that you will need a little less water or more water depending on how you like your wipes. After a few times of making them you will know what you like best. Then I put a couple squirts of baby soap and oil.

Place one half of the paper towel in the tub and wait a few minutes until all the water is absorbed.

Once the water is all absorbed you pull out the cardboard center.

I also like to use these to wipe his hands and face. I find these last me around 2 weeks before I need to make another tub. I made a tub for the diaper bag too but found that if they sit for too long they will mildew. I'm not out and about much so if I go out I just take the tub from his changing table.

I hope you enjoy these as much as we do.

Hi, Michelle! Great post and a good money saving idea! I just wanted to add that maybe if you use purified/distilled water instead of regular tap, it might last longer before it mildews?? Just a thought. I am so looking forward to your next post!!

Fellow WTE mommy, just read your post! Thanks for sharing the tutorial with pictures! We have been doing the same (my MIL has 11 kids and gave us the idea) and it's great! I bookmarked your post and will pass it on if I have a friend who is looking for directions on how!

For taking wipes on the go, just take a handful out of the container and put into a ziploc sandwich bag! I've also grabbed the changing table one in a hurry too, lol.

Following your blog! :)

You can also use this same basic recipe and pieces of flannel for cloth wipes for those who do cloth.

how much soap and oil needed? thanks for sharing.

Hi...Well I just use a few squirts. It's maybe a tablespoon. After you make these a few things you will find how you like them. More oily or more soapy. It's just your preference. Thank you for commenting.

Great recommendation. We are cloth users, but the mildew problem can happen with cloth or disposable wipes. A few drops of tea tree oil will help prevent bacteria from growing on your wipes. I usually take one of those small wipes containers, wet a few wipes with wipes solution and place them in the container before I get ready to leave, so they are good for an all-day trip.

I made them for my now 4 year old...LOVE THEM! I never had them mildew tho. We use them for everything.

If you want exact measurements I use 1 TBLS of wash and 1 TBLS of oil and 2 cups of water. If it's too wet I leave the lid off...if it's too dry you can add more water depending on your preference. I always used the bounty big roll and if I could find the select a size ones those are perfect. Homemade was so much better for his tush and truth be told when DH and I had a stomach virus we used them too as they're so much softer and gentler then TP (just toss them and don't flush tho!)

Great 'How to' article! I used pretty much the same formula but used it on little cloths instead. I cut old towels I picked up from the op shop into squares and used those.

Great idea and this would be soooo much cheaper than buy wet wipes and at least you would know what is in them :o)

You sound like my daughter... her baby was 12 yrs. old when she had her next baby.

Great tutorial and so easy! I just made my first batch with a different how-to and I wish I had known about not using a serrated knife! My carpet is covered in white fluff :) Ah well, I'll know next time. Thanks for posting!

I use this same recipe but with 1T of olive oil instead of the baby oil. I was told by our midwife that baby oil pulls out vitamins/minerals from the skin when used. She recommend using another liquid oil at room temperature like olive oil. I make the solution and put it in a spray bottle. I spray my baby's butt with it and then use a cotton square cloth to wipe off the poop/mess/etc. This is perfect for at home. On the road, you moisten the clothes before you leave and carry them in a wipe container (most dollar stores carry them). Or take a smaller spray bottle and dry cloth wipes. Works great and I love them!

I have used these in the past when I used to babysit. I cannot believe I didn't mention this to my brothers and their wives. Haven't tried this yet but, could you use a empty wipe container (the upright cylinder shaped ones) and just remove enough paper towels from the roll to make it fit?
